Wild horses, s’mores and beautiful beaches!
Looking to experience a place where wild horses roam free and you can camp beside wide, beautiful beaches? Assateague Island, a barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia, is a natural oasis, where you can truly escape from the modern world and take in nature at your own pace. Here are some top things to see and do and where to relax once you’re there.
#1 View Wild Horses
At first we didn’t see them, but then they were everywhere. On Assateague Island, pony-sized horses roam free and taking the time to observe them from afar is a must-do while on the island.
#2 Camping Out
While part of Assateague Island is managed by the National Park Service, part is also a state park and you can choose to camp in the State Park or National Park. Both have RV sites and allow pets with the State Park offering the added benefit of warm showers and some electric sites. Whichever you choose, reserve well in advance, as this is a popular spot for travelers from Maryland and well beyond. And, make sure to bring firewood, purchased locally, and the fixings to make s’mores!
#3 Take a Hike
There are several trails that are great for hiking and viewing flora and fauna while on this island. One of our favorites is the Life of the Marsh Trail in the National Park, where you can hang out on a secluded beach.
#4 Be a Beach Bum
With 37 miles of wide, sandy beaches, you have no excuse not to take the time to relax in the sun or waves. It’s a great way to start or end your time on Assateague Island and don’t forget to enjoy a good sunset, too.
