Thingvellir National Park in Iceland

Thingvellir National Park in Iceland

Head out from Reykjavik to Thingvellir National Park, in Southwest Iceland. It’s a spot of major importance to the Icelandic people. In 930, the Icelandic Parliament was originally established here. It’s also the site of the geologic dividing live between Europe and the Americas. You can stand on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the spot where the North American and European tectonic plates meet, and as they drift apart, Iceland is slowly being split in two. This makes for dramatic landscapes, which you can explore on hikes through the park.

Geysir and Gullfoss Waterfalls

Next, head down the road to see some geothermal activity at Geysir, which can hurl water up to 230 feet in the air. Next reach Iceland’s Golden Waterfalls, Gullfoss. It’s here where water from a glacier lake in the highlands cascades over a deep canyon.
