As they continue their hike, Darley and Morgan discuss the importance of tourists thoroughly planning their trip before coming to Lake Tahoe. This includes checking local weather and trail conditions as events like wildfires can occur in the region. Darley adds that official websites and social media outlets are excellent resources for planning your trip and staying updated while visiting Lake Tahoe. She also advises travelers that many popular parks require permits or reservations for hikes, which could take months to acquire. For information on how to book at parks, National Forests, campgrounds, and other outdoor sites, check out recreation.gov. In terms of personal safety, Morgan suggests that travelers come with enough supplies, including having enough water, sunscreen, and extra layers even if it is only for a short hike.

The episode continues with Darley and Morgan sharing their tips for practicing sustainable tourism. As a member of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, Morgan and other volunteers aim to keep the trails clean by monitoring waste and encouraging tourists to recreate responsibly. Visitors can help preserve Lake Tahoe by picking up their garbage and leaving the grounds the way they found them. Darley also encourages travelers to take car-free vacations. After arriving at the South Tahoe Airport, visitors can take a shuttle that runs to most South Shore properties. For the rest of the trip, Darley suggests biking, walking, using public transportation, or Lake Link, a free on-demand microtransit service, to get around town.

  • Important Safety Tip: Alert someone when you leave for your hike and provide them with a time to expect you back. This ensures someone is aware of your location in case of an emergency.
  • Prepare your supplies before heading out on a hike! High elevations require extra water to stay hydrated, and varying temperatures depending on the season may call for multiple layers.
