The episode and new season also debuts on Create TV, the national PBS lifestyle and cooking channel, on Friday, April 10th at 10:30am ET/ 7:30am PT & 5:30pm ET/ 2:30pm PT.
Emmy Award-nominated TV host and expert traveler Darley Newman showcases the diversity of Los Angeles, visiting West Hollywood, Pasadena, Costa Mesa and the Angeles National Forest. Mixing mountain biking and trail stewardship in the Angeles National Forest with the culinary scene in Pasadena, skateboarding in Costa Mesa and rock and roll history in West Hollywood, viewers are invited to see Los Angeles in a whole new way.
The half hour episode takes viewers to meet entrepreneurs, who offer enticing experiences for locals and travelers alike. At Old Sasoon Bakery, an Armenian bakery owned and run by Joseph Geragosian’s family since 1986, Darley picks up flatbread sandwiches and baklava en route to hiking trails just above Pasadena with stellar LA views. Darley explores Echo Mountain history while hiking with District Ranger Jamahl Butler.
In Costa Mesa, Darley meets with a variety of visionaries and local entrepreneurs to understand this city of arts and culture in the heart of Southern California. She takes a skateboard lesson with Joey Lopez of Shreducate Academy, meets the legendary co-owner of Wahoo’s Fish Taco, Wing Lam, and tastes craft beer at Gunwhale Ales with Justin Miller. At The Camp, she continues an eco-friendly theme with entrepreneur Shaheen Sadeghi, before experiencing Costa Mesa culinary delights with Chef Amar Santana, who competed on Season 13 of Bravo TV’s Top Chef series, at Vaca Restaurant and Patrick Nguyen at The Straw.
In Pasadena, LA’s film and TV history come to life with Pasadena Walking Tours guide Chris Fennessy and at the Gamble House, known by many for its role as Doc Brown’s house in “Back to the Future.” As Jennifer Trotoux explains, the Gamble House is also a well-preserved work of the American Arts and Crafts movement. Darley explores the local food and drinks scene, ranging from LA rosé to Mexican tortas, with Lisa Scalia of Melting Pot Food Tours. No trip to Pasadena would be complete without a visit to the Rose Bowl Stadium, where Jens Weiden introduces Darley to this National Historic Landmark with a fascinating past.
Continuing with the greener side of Los Angeles, Darley showcases accessible mountain biking on the landmark Gabrielino Trail, a United States National Recreation Trail, with forest supervisor Jerry Perez and enthusiasts, Mike and Robin McGuire. Shamane Morejon and other volunteers from the Mount Wilson Bicycling Association enlist Darley to help reshape trails in the forest, making them sustainable for multiple users.
Finally, Darley dives into West Hollywood’s famous Sunset Strip, thriving Design District, and top hotels. She takes a rock n’ roll walking tour with Jon D’Amico, visiting destinations that have been hotspots for artists and musicians throughout history, including Barney’s Beanery, Mystery Pier Books, The Viper Room and V Wine Room. At the Sunset Marquis, Klaus Messner reveals the history behind Nightbird Studios, one of the top recording studios in the world, where everyone from Aerosmith to U2 and Usher have recorded hits. Darley also visits Gelato Festival, where a gelato laboratory, museum, and shop attracts gelato lovers from all over the world.
