There’s nothing like going home for the holidays to reminisce at your childhood haunts and explore exciting new spots. While many people think of Myrtle Beach as solely a beach getaway, locals like Darley, share that there’s much to do year round, especially during the holiday season.
Darley begins her Myrtle Beach adventure at Brookgreen Gardens, a nature escape she frequented as a child. While her grandmother enjoyed a great book in a cozy spot of the gardens, Darley explored the magnificent grounds, taking in the breathtaking beauty and elegant art. Now, Darley is bringing listeners on a behind the scenes tour with Brookgreen Gardens’ CEO and President Page Kiniry.
Strolling amongst the stunning Spanish moss, Darley and Page discuss the activities available for travelers at Brookgreen Gardens. From admiring the largest American figurative art collection in the world, to taking in the native plant species, and learning about South Carolina’s fascinating history, there is much to do amid the 250 acres of manicured garden and 9,127 acres of wildlife sanctuaries. Don’t forget to stop at Brookgreen Gardens’ Lowcountry Zoo and Floyd Family Farm to meet heritage animal breeds, like Marsh Tacky horses. The same ticket you use to enter the garden also grants you access to the zoo.
This holiday season, travelers and locals alike have the opportunity to experience Brookgreen Gardens in a different light, during Nights of a Thousand Candles. At this special event, the gardens are illuminated by cafe lights, jarred lights, bright colors, and hand lit candles. Visitors can also look forward to music and theatre productions, as well as culinary delights like delicious hot chocolate.
After traversing the gardens, Darley heads to nearby Pawleys Island to shop and dine at The Hammock Shops Village. With over 20 shops and restaurants, this South Carolina hotspot dates back to 1938. Darley steps inside The Christmas Mouse, a one stop holiday gift shop with over 30,000 ornaments, collectibles, and accessories. After browsing the holiday selections, Darley and her colleague, Evelyn Kwan Green, head to Local, where they savor homemade macaroni and cheese and boiled peanuts topped with parmesan Reggiano cheese. They end the wonderful day taking in the charming and relaxing atmosphere of the Hammock Shops.
