Michelle takes Darley up to an apartment above the Gay Dolphin that her husband, Buzz Plyler, grew up in. Complete with beautiful ocean front views and vintage 1960s furniture, stepping into this apartment is like traveling back in time.
As the largest gift shop in South Carolina, the Gay Dolphin is jam-packed with 5 floors full of colorful seashells, nautical clocks, sharks teeth, and more. The Gay Dolphin opened in 1946 and has been loved by locals and travelers alike since then.
Darley and Michelle discuss how the Gay Dolphin aims to create a fun and family friendly experience that everyone can enjoy by encouraging visitors to play with the merchandise and take photos. Michelle expresses the Gay Dolphin’s commitment to creating positive Myrtle Beach memories for generations to come.
Only a few blocks away, Darley heads to Grand Strand Brewing Company where she sits down with owner Clayton Burrous and tries Beach Easy, the official beer of Myrtle Beach. Toasting to Darley’s homecoming, Clayton shares how the Myrtle Beach experience is reflected in their beers, including a Hazy IPA called Airbrush, inspired by the airbrush t-shirt shops that line the famous boardwalk.
As they enjoy the cozy living room atmosphere of Grand Strand Brewing Company, Clayton shares that local entrepreneurs like himself aim to revitalize the downtown area and create spaces for the community to enjoy. Clayton also introduces Darley to Wes Loman, better known as “the Salty Golfer,” a local influencer who collaborated with Grand Strand Brewing Company to create the Salty Golfer beer.
