Debuting one of our new PBS episodes at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC is quite an honor! We couldn’t be happier at how our recent “Macao & Hong Kong” film debut event turned out with Smithsonian Associates. An audience of 150 people attended the film debut event and lecture, which was held in the theatre of the Ripley Center, located between the “Castle” and the Freer Gallery of Art with an entrance on The Mall.
Friends, colleagues and fans turned out to learn more about Macao and Hong Kong, two of the world’s most dynamic destinations and the subject of a brand new episode in our fall season for PBS. Guests were greeted in the concourse before entering the theatre, where I took the stage to share my insights on Hong Kong, a destination that I’ve had the privilege of filming twice, and Macao, which was new to me, but the perfect pairing with Hong Kong.
Highlights of the episode include driving across the world’s longest sea crossing bridge, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, and my harrowing bungee off the Macao Tower, the world’s highest commercial bungee. A trip to the newly opened Tai Kwun in Hong Kong, sustainable food with Chef Peggy Chan in Hong Kong’s Central, nightlife, hiking, dim sum and more were also highlighted. In Macao, we explored Portuguese and Chinese cultural influences, including Macanese cuisine, clothing and culture.
I was excited to understand what the audience was most interested in as well. Events like these are a good chance to connect in person with friends and fans of our series. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, which garnered some of its inspiration from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, was a hot topic, as was the cuisine. The audience was able to interact during the evening and win prizes through fun trivia.
I was scared enough doing this bungee, but honestly, seeing it in VR through Samsung Googles is a trip! I’m still not sure how I did that! I shot the experience with an Insta 360 One X camera taped to my hand.
Following the presentation, we all went into the concourse, where the Hong Kong Tourism Board and the Macao Government Tourist Office were on hand to answer questions. They also sponsored a truly tasty spread. Gambas a Macau, shrimp filled with garlic, chili, shallots and parsley and finished with white wine, were complimented by dim sum, including spring rolls, sesame balls and pork buns. Scrumptious egg tarts and Portuguese wine were also on offer!
It was nice to get to mingle with attendees and hear from so many who were planning trips to these destinations! Following the event, I went back to the nearby Kimpton George Hotel, where a cute robe and comfy bed awaited. This hotel is located a block from Union Station, so super convenient. Like all Kimptons, it’s also individualized with fun decor and a great restaurant and bar onsite. I was able to meet Paulette Hatfield, a travel agent who won the chance to attend the Smithsonian event, for a bite and got to hear about her amazing world travels and adventures, too.
