Famous for its therapeutic waters, throughout history Hot Springs, Arkansas has attracted Native Americans, travelers, baseball players, gangsters and celebrities, who’ve sought out relaxation and healing treatments in this unique spa town. A great way to explore Hot Springs is by foot, walking along historic Bathhouse Row.
There are over 40 active springs in Hot Springs, which don’t just attract those that are ailing. In the early 20th century, Hot Springs served as the spring training ground for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and other teams. Babe Ruth trained in Hot Springs nine times and one of the iconic bars he visited is a fun place to stop.
Dating back to the early 20th century, the Ohio Club has had a history of interesting clients, including gangsters like Al Capone, Bugsy Segel, and Lucky Luciano and Major League Ball players. It’s also reputed to be the oldest bar in the state of Arkansas.
Superior Bathhouse is another good place to try Arkansas beer. This small-batch brewery and distillery is located in a historic bathhouse just across from the Ohio Club. Using the hot springs water as the main ingredient, Superior Bathhouse creates craft beers and also serves lunch and dinner. Families may also enjoy the root beer crafted with local honey and, of course, water from the springs.
