Lake Tahoe Tiny World View from Travels with Darley

We’ve been fortunate enough to be able to film in national forests across the United States for our PBS TV series “Travels with Darley,” so when we heard about the first-ever National Forest Week, kicking off July 8th and running through July 14th, we knew we had to debut some of our newest 360 videos, filmed with the new Insta 360 ONE X. Filmed in May in and around Lake Tahoe, Nevada, using the Insta360 One X, these videos capture blue bird sky days and the stunning public lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

In the first video, I went hiking with Morgan Steele of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, which maintains the Tahoe Rim Trail system and inspires stewardship to preserve access to the gorgeous Lake Tahoe region. She took me out on the Tahoe Rim Trail to check out Desolation Wilderness, part of the Tahoe National Forest with over 63,000 acres of sub-alpine and alpine forest, granite peaks, and glacial cut valleys and lakes.

From our vantage point atop a boulder, we had panoramic views. Heavenly Ski Resort, Lake Tahoe and more are visible and you can spin around to see them as Morgan describes them in this 360 video. The Tahoe Rim Trail is 165+ miles of single-track trail open to hiking, horse riders, and mountain bikers in most areas. Fifty miles of the trail is co-located with the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail and part of the National Trails System.

We next ventured out in a clear kayak with Kelsey Weist of Clearly Tahoe to explore Lake Tahoe in a clear bottom kayak. In the video, you’ll hear Kelsey describe the depths you can see down into Lake Tahoe, the surrounding national forest and stunning views. 7 in 10 Americans live within a 2 hour drive of a National Forest, meaning there are lots of great places to get out and enjoy your national forests.

We certainly have enjoyed sharing the experiences with you. Learn more about National Forest Week and use the hashtag #NationalForestWeek on social to celebrate.
