Visit this European destination honoring American soldiers!
On our visit to Bastogne in Belgium, Martin Cugnon, an expert from the Bastogne War Museum, gave great context to this important site. Bastogne is where US troops from the 101st Airborne Division and the 10th Armored division were isolated and surrounded by Germans during the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. They didn’t give up, even during the brutal winter conditions. Steven Spielberg’s “Band of Brothers” is based on the experiences of Easy Company, one division from the 101st.
Today, if you visit Bastogne, there’s a museum and the Mardasson Memorial, honoring the American soldiers who were wounded or killed during the Battle of the Bulge. Visitors from around the world, including American Veterans, to pay tribute to the men who fought and lost their lives here. Watch the video above and check out the below are photos from our visit, which will be featured, along with our visit to the foxholes, in an upcoming episode on PBS stations of the new “Travels with Darley” series.
