An otherworldly scenic drive to Haleakala National Park.
If you’re looking for a scenic road trip that will earn you bragging rights, fill up your tank and take a drive to the Summit Area of Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui.
Home to the island’s highest peak, driving the two-lane paved road up to the over 10,000-foot high summit in Haleakala National Park is a journey in itself. A popular time to visit the summit is at sunrise or sunset, when the colors inside the crater are spectacular.
The drive from Kahului to the summit takes around an hour and a half and during that drive, you’ll pass through a variety of ecological zones as you wind by awesome scenic views. Keep a lookout for adventurous bikers flying downhill at top speed.
Many people make the trip to the summit to see the sunrise over Haleakala Crater. Whatever time of day you make the drive, take the time to savor the views, especially when you reach the top. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime visit and the otherworldly landscapes just may take your breath away.
