Even the most seasoned traveler will learn something new with the launch of “Travels with Darley’s” new, fifth season on PBS. From New York State to France, Emmy Award-nominated TV host Darley Newman joins local experts and guides to reveal bucket list adventures and fascinating finds. “Travels with Darley” helps viewers gain an authentic view of destinations and take away ideas for interesting experiences they can recreate on their adventures by having locals guide viewers through experiential adventures.
As a host, Darley doesn’t just observe each experience, but dives in, trying everything from fly fishing in West Virginia to mountain biking in the Santa Fe National Forest to taking a class in glass blowing in Corning, New York. The means that the mishaps of travel are captured right alongside the excitement and fun.
Season five kicks off with “New York’s Southern Finger Lakes.” Darley combines family friendly local museums and vineyards with an exciting glider flight from Harris Hill, the soaring capital of America. Viewers experience Keuka Lake with a lesson in stand up paddle boarding, learn about glass blowing at The Corning Museum of Art and go wine tasting at Dr. Konstantin Frank Wine Cellars.
Next, viewers hike, bike and raft along the epic Continental Divide Trail in New Mexico, a National Scenic Trail. This adventure is particularly timely as 2018 is the 50thanniversary of our National Trails System and the 40thof the Continental Divide Trail. Darley hikes amid sunflowers with a young, female adventurer who trekked the entire over 3000 mile trail just last year, learns about medicinal remedies on a sacred mountain with a Navajo Medicine Man and visits North America’s first International Dark Skies Sanctuary, the Cosmic Campground, before staying the night in a Benedictine monastery that welcomes travelers, many of whom take a vow of silence during their stay.
Two episodes take viewers to experience the best of Santa Fe, including a mind-bending art exhibition supported by “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin and a James Beard Award winning restaurant specializing in spicy margaritas and dishes made with rare Chimayo chile.
In a special episode focused on East Coast national forests, a road trip along West Virginia’s Highland Scenic Highway in the Monongahela National Forest is combined with New York State’s only national forest, the Finger Lakes National Forest, where Darley takes viewers to a historic site significant to the Women’s Rights Movement.
Along France’s Cote d’Azur, Darley travels from sand to snow on a ski adventure in the French Alps and to the beaches of glamourous Cannes and Nice, where a local company allows anyone with a driver’s license to rent a classic car for one day or more.
“Travels with Darley” started as digital shorts on AOL and MSN in 2014 and debuted on PBS in 2016. This new season marks the 30thhalf hour of “Travels with Darley.” The series was created by the same team behind “Equitrekking,” the Emmy-winning PBS series also starring Darley and now distributed to networks in over 85 nations.
In addition to broadcasts on PBS, viewers can now binge “Travels with Darley’s” first 13 episodes on Amazon Prime. Watch previews for Season Five of the series online. Check out some upcoming debut times on PBS stations and check your local PBS TV listings for the most up to date times in your area.
