Called “God’s Own Country,” Yorkshire is a historic county in Northern England that’s home to stunning national parks, hip cities and stunning abbeys. Here’s what an expert guide we filmed with suggests for your visit.

If you are thinking of visiting Yorkshire, the ideal place to stay is the City of York. Conveniently situated for all areas of the County, York has accommodations to suit everyone, from boutique B&B’s and self catering apartments to Yorkshire’s only 5-star hotel, The Grand Hotel and Spa, situated right across the street from the railroad station. Some of the must-see things while you are in York are the 800 year old Cathedral, York Minster. This magnificent building dominates the skyline and contains the largest Medieval stained glass window in the world. The Jorvik Viking Museum contains the largest collection of Viking memorabilia in the whole of England and is right here in this magnificent city.

Traveling further afield from York Fountains Abbey, is the remains of a Cistercian Abbey which begun life in the year 1132, decimated by Henry VIII in the early 16th Century, it is well worth a visit as it stands near Studley Royal and is one of the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites here in Yorkshire.

Another place of outstanding beauty is the Yorkshire Dales National Park of over 500 square miles and the former practice area of James Herriot, the most famous Vet in the world. His old house is now the only museum in the whole of England dedicated to veterinary science, it is open to the public and if you were a fan of all creatures great and small is a must see. Whitby Head East from York and drive across the North York Moors, past the station that was Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter movies, Goathland Station, and arrive in the Coastal Town of Whitby. The eerie Abbey stands high on the East side of town overlooking the spot where Bram Stoker created Dracula, also home to the Captain Cook museum, the Whitby Jet Works and several other fascinating things to help you enjoy your time here.
