As our nation approaches the 250th commemorations of the founding of America in 2026, there is more and more interest in travel to destinations where history takes center stage. You’ll find lots of these in Delaware.

We recently traveled throughout the state to discover sites related to the American Revolution that welcome travelers to follow in the footsteps of our founding fathers and mothers! Places like the New Castle Court House Museum, New Castle Historic District, Hale-Byrnes House, and Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site. These destinations are great for history lovers. Here are tips for visiting these sites and highlights for destinations you can visit to uncover Delaware’s storied past.

New Castle and Newark American Revolution Sites to Visit

  • New Castle Court House Museum  
    Explore Delaware’s first court house, where delegates voted for American independence in 1776.
  • New Castle Historic District
    Walk in the footsteps of revolutionaries in this colonial-era district with many historical sites to discover. New Castle is a charming destination to explore on foot. Wear sensible shoes to walk the cobblestone streets and view historic homes, churches and restaurants. We recommend stopping for lunch at Jessop’s Tavern, where you can enjoy shepherd’s pie that’s truly family sized!
  • Hale-Byrnes House
    Discover a home that served as the site of a Council of War meeting leading up to the pivotal Battle of Brandywine.
  • Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site
    Tour the site of the only battle of the American Revolution fought in Delaware. This is hallowed ground. Learn about the experiences of Black families both free and enslaved, who lived here. Visit their site to learn about scheduling a tour of Couch’s Bridge and the efforts of the Friends of Cooch’s Bridge Historic Site to help preserve this important site.
