This slice of French Caribbean paradise is full of exciting hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
The Guadeloupe Islands are an archipelago of breathtaking landscapes located in the Eastern Caribbean between Dominica and Antigua. An overseas department of France, French and Creole are spoken in the Guadeloupe Islands which is also characterized by a fusion of rich French Caribbean culture amidst wondrous nature.
#1 Discover Some of the Best Beaches in the Caribbean
The islands of Les Saintes, Basse-Terre, Marie Galante, and Grande-Terre in Guadeloupe are known for their magnificent white, pink, and black sand beaches, where you can go surfing on turquoise waves or bask in the sun. In Basse-Terre, I recommend visiting Pompierre Beach, where you can lie beneath shady coconut trees and enjoy the sounds of calming ocean waves. If you’re interested in surfing, head to Bananier Beach, also in Basse-Terre, to ride the gentle crystal clear waves and walk across gorgeous black sands. This beach is great spot for beginners to take lessons with instructors from local surf schools.
#2 Stroll Through Bustling Street Markets
The islands of Grande-Terre is known for it’s gorgeous white sand beaches, dramatic coastline, and sugar cane plantations. I recommend you start your Grande-Terre excursion in Pointe-à-Pitre, the largest city in the Guadeloupe Islands, filled with bustling markets, art, music, and French colonial architecture to explore. Head down to the harbor to stroll through one of the most dynamic markets, where you can taste fresh local fruits and listen to live Guadeloupean folk music, called Gwo-ka. Recognized by UNESCO as a symbol of Guadeloupean intangible heritage, Gwo-ka was created by the islands’ enslaved peoples in the 18th century and fuses Guadeloupean Creole rhythms, songs, and dancing played on ka drums. In Les Saintes, discover the bustling village of Terre-de-Haut, where you can go shopping to find handmade jewelry and clothing in Madras, a traditional Guadeloupean fabric.
Bonus tip: take a Gwo-ka dance class at Akadémiduka in Pointe-à-Pitre.
#3 Explore Guadeloupe’s Breathtaking Landscapes
For those of you looking for nature escapes head to Basse-Terre, an island covered in dense tropical forest and stunning black, pink, and caramel sand beaches. For adventure seekers, explore the island on ATV rides and horseback riding through breathtaking landscapes. Get active at Guadeloupe National Park, which boasts over 30 waterfalls and over 250 miles of hiking trails through the rugged mountains and rainforest. I recommend hiking to La Soufrière volcano, an active volcano that has exotic plants and flowers at the base and amazing views from the summit.
Also in Basse-Terre, book a wellness stay at Tendacayou Ecolodge & Spa, where you can stay in treehouses, surrounded by lush rainforest and gorgeous ocean views. This eco-friendly retreat offers rejuvenating treatments, massages, meditation, and even a fish pedicure that is equally relaxing, tickling and unforgettable.
There are many museums and landmarks in Basse-Terre where you can immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the Guadeloupe Islands. Head to the Ecomusée Creol’Art to see displays detailing the history and traditions of the Guadeloupe Islands. Travelers can also take a tour of the Rum Museum located at Reimonenq Rum Distillery, as well as enjoy a delicious tasting. Another historic site to explore is Fort Delgrès, a national monument. In the early 1800s, two Guadeloupean leaders, including set off an explosion at Fort Delgrès in protest of the reinstitution of slavery. While learning the rich history of this landmark, travelers can also take in gorgeous coastline views.
At the Memorial ACTe Museum, uncover the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the African diaspora, through interactive art installations and multimedia displays. In Les Saintes, Fort Napoleon is a must-visit. With a historic past as a defensive fort, this landmark has postcard worthy views of the Bay of Les Saintes, one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
#5 Taste Local Flavors
You can’t leave Basse-Terre without heading down to the center of town to try a local delicacy, the bokit sandwich. Filled with just about anything from seafood to chicken, to ham and cheese, this Guadeloupe Islands treat only costs a few euros.
On the island of Les Saintes, dine at Au Bon Vivre to try a Guadeloupe specialty, fresh seafood. One of the best restaurants in Les Saintes, you can expect a fusion of French and island cuisine with popular multi-course options. After enjoying a mouthwatering meal at Au Bon Vivre, I highly recommend walking over to the docks to grab a tourment d’amour, a pastry you can only find in Les Saintes. This spongy coconut cake filled with coconut jam and loaded with spices is made with a secret recipe only known to those who make it.
